Earth Day, what are you doing to stop plastics use?

Updated: 23 hours ago

April is Earth Month

This year's theme, “Conserving Every Ecosystem, Caring for Every Creature,” highlights the intersection of conservation and behavior change. By focusing on daily actions and continuous learning, we can create a sustainable and just world not only for humans but for all species and ecosystems.

AND

Monday, April 22, 2024 is Earth Day.

The Theme is: PLANET VS PLASTICS

Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and a brighter future.

2024 EARTHDAY.ORG is unwavering in its commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040.

Let's all do our part and consciously cut way back on the use of plastics of any kind, especially the disposable type. If you won't buy it, they will have to stop making it, but we must all pitch in. It's easy to say, well I won't make a difference, I don't use much.

You will make a difference, and maybe you can inspire a few more people to cut back too. It's a domino effect, and it works, we just have to stick to it.

Insist on not receiving things wrapped in plastic, and using plastic bottles or containers.

If you must get them, reuse and recycle them.

A LITTLE EARTH DAY HISTORY

Since 1962, when the book Silent Spring became a best seller, Americans have been more aware of the danger and life-threatening results of our actions in the use of pesticides and the enormous amount of waste products and pollutants that are pumped into the air and our lands. Our planet has endured Oil spills, toxic leaks, pollutants, overbuilding, and overpopulation with resources being exhausted.

Things have escalated, and people are becoming inspired to do something to make a change, yet bureaucracy and political gain have created even more of a hardship in keeping our planet safe.

1980, Gaylor Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, wrote in the EPA Journal, "It was on that day that Americans made it clear that they understood and were deeply concerned over the deterioration of our environment and the mindless dissipation of our resources. That day left a permanent impact on the politics of America. ... In short, Earth Day launched the Environmental decade with a bang.”

Nelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 for his role as the founder of Earth Day.

Earth Day was the push the nation needed. Congress passed at least six major initiatives that would become the foundation of our nation’s environmental laws.

Earth Day 2000, 30 years later, sent world leaders a loud and clear message: Citizens around the world wanted quick and decisive action on global warming and clean energy.

In 2010, more than one billion people took action for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

2020, For the 50th anniversary, on the Earth Day Network,

tens of millions of people across 193 countries participated in one of the largest online mass mobilizations in history.

More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

The 2023 Theme was Invest in our planet.
