I've heard it said that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile... That’s a myth. It takes fewer muscles to frown because all you need to do is relax your face and let gravity pull the corners of your mouth down into that frown. That's probably why you see more people with grumpy face, it doesn't take much effort. A smiling face is active and takes work.
It actually takes more muscle power to smile, especially if you do it with your whole face.
When you use muscle power it requires energy.. that comes in the form of calories.
So, if you curl the sides of your mouth up, lift your cheeks, and the sides of your eyes, you are using those muscles and burning calories (although marginal amounts). The point is that smiling is good for many things including your muscles and your metabolism.
I love to smile and I love to eat. The more I smile, the more calories I burn. You will have to smile quite actively to utilize any substantial amounts, but it is fun trying.
Smiling is contagious. If you smile, others may smile back, if not, you gave someone a gift.
Walk around smiling and if someone asks you, why are you smiling so much? Tell them you’re burning calories.
They say a smile is just a frown turned upside-down.
When Alex was 5 years old she asked me why I had lines next to my eyes. I told her that they were smile lines, that I am so happy and I smile so much it created these lines.
The next day she pointed at the outside corner of her eyes and said to me " Look, I think I am getting some!"
